Suriamas Charity Works Info Sheet

Are you a handy dandy DIY person or someone keen to pick up some skills? If YES, do read on to learn more...

What is this all about?
Suriamas JMB is embarking on a new charity project which we name “Charity Works!” We are in search of keen volunteers to help set up a repair and recycling centre called “Charity Workshop” in Suriamas. This small workshop aims to create a space for Suriamas residents to:
1) Bring their broken items to be repaired
2) Donate any unwanted but still useable items to be sold.

All proceeds from repairs and sales will be donated to Beautiful Gate Foundation for the Disabled.

What are the benefits?
1. Cost saving – Save $$$
By repairing and reusing items, residents can save money. By setting up a central repair workshop, residents do not have to purchase their own tools, equipment and consumables. Owners renting out their units can have their damaged items repaired and not need to spend money on new items.

2. Good for the Environment –  in Going Green
There will be less need burn fuel transporting items in and out of Suriamas. The amount of refuse going into landfills will be reduced and this will be good for the environment.

3. Charity in our heart
All contributions and sale of items will be donated to charity. Residents will have an opportunity to contribute their time and expertise for a good cause. Those who wish to learn repair skills will have an opportunity to do so.

What will this project involve?
Suriamas JMB has agreed in principle to allocate space for this project to take place. The “Charity Shop” is a display cum repair centre which will be set up in the Suriamas Clubhouse where smaller items will be repaired and displayed. Another space will be set up for the “Charity Workshop” in the covered car park to repair and store bulkier items.

Residents who have items for repair can either borrow tools to do the repair themselves, or bring the items to the repair centre to be repaired. Repaired items can either be reused by the resident, who makes a contribution to the repair centre for the use of the tools or repair services, or donated to the repair centre for sale. Items to be donated will be evaluated first to assess if they are worth repairing or will have a resale value.

Repairs will be done by Suriamas or outside volunteers. Services will be rendered free of charge and all proceeds will go to a charity. Experienced handymen are urged to join the organising committee and contribute their time and expertise for a good cause. Those without experience but wish to learn repair skills are also most welcome.

The repair and recycling centre “Charity Shop & Workshop” will be open once or twice a month initially to accept and repair items. At other times a contact phone number and email address will be provided for residents to contact to inquire about items to be repaired or purchased. Small items for sale will be displayed in showcases in the repair centre while larger items will be photographed and their details displayed in a catalogue at the repair centre and posted on a website set up for the purpose.

More details will be discussed when the volunteers for the above project meets.
